Skins

Skins are items on Novilar that can be applied to on-site pets to help users create original colors, patterns and characters. Skins are overlaid on top of the base pet's image as a .png, so leaving parts of the skin blank could create interesting tattoos or details that still reveal the pet's base colors and markings in a creative way. There is no price difference for skins that cover (or do not cover) the entire pet's silhouette, but all skins must remain within the shape of the lineart, and the pet's image may NOT be moved within the space of the canvas. Doing so would cause it to mis-align with official site apparel, which pets with skins can still wear! To obtain a skin, you can either purchase a pre-made in the Skins and Bones shop or submit your own on the Skin Submission Page. You can either make the skin yourself, commission one from Novilar site artists, or commission one from a different artist on your own, perhaps via the forums. Unique skins can be commissioned between users for “real” or in-game currency before they are submitted as an on-site item.

Skins MUST...
  • be a custom color or accent on an official Novilar base
  • match up exactly with the pet's original image within the 600 x 525 pixel .png frame
Skins CAN...
  • be used to create accents that exceeds the lineart of the pet. This is a way for artists to create "custom pet apparel". If this method is used, the skin cannot also include a complete recolor or cover the entire pet's image - Lineart edits that take up significantly more than 50% of the pet's image are considered Deluxe Skins.
  • still wear official site-wide pet apparel when uploaded
Skins CANNOT...

  • move the image in any way that will make it misalign with the original base.
  • have item art that does not match the skin itself or was made incorrectly. Skins with incorrect item art will be rejected and require re-submission with valid item art in order to become an approved skin.
  • display the nipples or obvious genitalia of any species.
  • be controversial or in bad taste, such as sexual content or excessive gore. This is to the discretion of the administration. Please feel free to send an inquiry to the staff to see if your idea will be accepted or rejected to the ModBox before or during the artistic process.
  • be a photomanipulation or use any copyrighted materials, such as logos or identifiable characteristics of a copyrighted character.
  • be of very poor artistic quality. We strive to maintain a basic level of visual aesthetic across the site, and if it doesn’t meet our basic standards, it may be rejected.
You may display your skins on a personal website or portfolio as long as you clearly credit the base to Novilar, provide a link or url back to www.novilar.com on or near the image, and not resell or misuse the bases under any circumstances (including theft of the official novilar bases by selling adoptables off-site).

Deluxe Skins

Deluxe Skins allow you to make major changes to an official Novilar base. You are allowed to make major, complex changes to official pet base, as long as it is still apparent to staff which pet base the edits have been made from. You are allowed to use minor elements of other bases for your Deluxe Skin (adding the antlers from deer, for example, to a different species).

Deluxe Skins replace the pet's official image when applied. The final .png of the Skin when uploaded will replace your pet's image, and not be laid on top of it, which allows a Deluxe Skin to have greater edit freedoms than a Basic Skin.

Deluxe Skins MUST...
  • be a custom edit on an official Novilar pet base, and it must be obvious which species' base was used
  • match up exactly with the pet's original image within the 600 x 525 pixel .png frame
Deluxe Skins CAN...
  • be used to create custom apparel and major body edits to a pet's official base
  • flip, rotate, and resize the base within reason in order to make additional room for edits.
  • still breed and battle as a "normal" onsite pet - the changes are only visual and do not affect the rest of gameplay
  • contain human features, as long as these do not overpower the rest of the design and remain under roughly 50% of the pet's total construction (example: a centaur).
  • contain smaller, secondary pets within the image (such as a minipet), as long as the smaller creature(s) follow all other site rules and do not overpower the "original" pet.
  • include background elements, such as a tree or grassy ground setting. However, full-painted background scenes that cover all or almost all of the canvas are only allowed for Custom pets (see below). Only roughly 25% or less of the canvas may be used for specifically background elements on Deluxe Skins.
Deluxe Skins CANNOT...
  • less than a full body image. You cannot simply upload a bust or headshot which protrudes off-screen, or fades out around the edges.
  • have item art that does not match the skin itself or was made incorrectly. Skins with incorrect item art will be rejected and require re-submission with valid item art in order to become an approved skin.
  • wear official pet apparel when uploaded

Custom

A Custom Pet completely replaces your pet's image on-site! It is not required to use any official Novilar base, and is completely custom-made by an artist.

Custom Pets are unique pet images that may be applied to any adult pet to permanently replace its image on site. That pet will still be able to breed, battle, and level as normal (as if it were still the original pet), but its image will be replaced with the one you provide as long as it is "wearing" the Custom Skin. Customs still act like "skins" on site and can be applied/removed to a pet, purchased, and sold in user shops. Images can be commissioned / sold with the intent of uploading them onto the site as custom pets. For any submission of a custom pet image that is not your own exclusive work, you must have the artist’s written permission to upload as a pet. Anyone who is discovered to have uploaded other’s work without written permission from the artist or having full rights to the image will be dealt with as Art Thieves, and punished according to our TOS. Each Custom Pet submission must be unique, even if it is a recolor of an already existing custom pet on-site. An artist could, for example, open a shop on-site selling pre made original colors on their adoptable-like custom pet base. Your custom pet must be some kind of animal or mythical creature (even if of your own creation).

Customs MUST...
  • fit within a 600 x 525 pixel .png frame
Customs CAN...
  • include user-painted backgrounds or background elements that fill the entire canvas space.
  • include part of an official Novilar base, such as in the case that a deluxe skin has been ruled to be over-edited (in which case it can be submitted as a Custom)
  • include more than one creature in the image as long as one is clearly a very small accent pet, such as a butterfly, mouse, or small cat.
  • incorporate some human aspects - a mermaid or sphinx, for example, would be acceptable. The rule of thumb is that 50% or LESS of the creature is allowed to be human. A minotaur, with a bull head and all other features completely human, would be rejected.
Customs CANNOT...
  • wear official on-site pet apparel. It can technically be equipped, but will not show up in the pet's image.
  • depict a human (but can have human parts, such as a mermaid-esq creature)
  • be an object. A tree or rock, for example, with no obvious features or limbs, will not pass as a custom pet.
  • have the pet be hidden within in the image. Backgrounds are allowed in custom pet images, but the pet must be immediately distinguishable from its surroundings.
  • less than a full body image. You cannot simply upload a bust or headshot which protrudes off-screen, or fades out around the edges. Smaller parts of the image being covered in a sensible way, such as hiding feet in tall grass, would be acceptable. Apparel is also completely acceptable, both as a means of covering parts of the custom pet and in general.

All submissions must be your own work. If it is not your original work, then you must have specific permission from the original artist to use their piece(s) for this purpose. Anyone found using work that is not their own, that they do not have express permission for, will be punished, and the item(s) and pet(s) will be removed.
